About Young Invincibles:

Young Invincibles (“YI”) is a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization, with 30+ employees and an annual budget of $6.5mm, working to expand economic opportunity for young people ages 18 to 34 and to amplify their voices in the national political conversation and policy arena. Founded by and for young adults in the summer of 2009 during the debate over health care reform, YI has quickly grown into a leading voice for young people on the issues of health care, higher education, employment, and civic engagement. The organization has achieved major successes in areas ranging from the regulation of college health plans to Pell grants and has successfully engaged hundreds of thousands of young adults online through a network of over 100 partner organizations. Our regional offices (California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Texas) have increased grant aid for low-income college students, expanded funding for community colleges, and ensured undocumented students can access in-state tuition.

Position Description:

Young invincibles (YI) seeks a Senior Director of External Affairs to provide strategy, leadership, and high-level management to the public policy, research, government relations, communications, and digital teams. This position is responsible for directing YI’s public policy and public affairs strategy at a high level, and ensuring that the policy/research and communications teams provide strategic and technical support to YI’s regional offices. He/she/they will also maintain critical relationships with external stakeholders on YI’s behalf to advance policy priorities pertaining to young adults in the areas of higher education, health care, and workforce.

He/she/they should be skilled in building relationships and working in coalitions and have excellent analytical skills, with an ability to think critically and write effectively. The position is a fantastic opportunity to impact a wide range of policy issues affecting young people and to also direct external relations for an influential public policy organization. 

The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of the policy and politics associated with YI’s issues both at the federal level and, broadly, in YI’s five regions.  They will also have a demonstrated ability to both develop creative policy solutions and influence legislation to advance legislative priorities. Must have outstanding political instincts and ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Capitol Hill experience preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, direction and professional development of a team of highly skilled directors -- including the Health Care Policy & Advocacy Director, the Higher Education Policy & Advocacy Director, the Policy Research Director, and Communications Director.

  • Direct and support advocacy strategies to influence federal policymakers (executive and legislative branches) and policymakers in YI’s regional offices (IL, CA, NY, TX, CO). 

  • Lead the development of the organization’s policy agenda - working closely with the policy team, Regional Directors, Research Director and Director of Young Adult Engagement & Advocacy.

  • Work closely with the Director of Young Adult Engagement and Advocacy and regional directors and teams to build advocacy efforts in an integrated and strategic fashion.

  • Generate a public affairs strategy that will allow YI to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, key influencers, and policymakers.

  • Work with YI’s communications team to advance and implement a strategic plan to increase YI’s brand identity, broaden awareness of and increase public support for its programs and policy priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.

  • Thoughtfully and proactively identify emerging issues and challenges faced by the organization and its policy priorities. Work with leadership and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.

  • Collaborate with directors and their teams to raise brand awareness, image, influence, engagement with the general public and key audiences, to help build support for YI’s policy positions. 

  • Represent the organization publicly with partners, media, elected officials and staff.

  • Serve on YI’s Senior Leadership Team, and as YI’s top public policy advisor

  • Provide guidance on department budgets and advise on future demands

  • Work with the development team on concept development and proposals. 

  • In consultation with department heads, the Director of HR & Operations and the Deputy Executive Director, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff.


  • Minimum 7+ years of relevant communications and policy advocacy experience. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop multi-pronged communications plans that are ambitious and achievable, and that both deepen public understanding/awareness about critical issues and promote organizations.

  • Exceptional strategic sensibility, including the ability to develop effective messaging that brings together consumer, brand, policy and political lenses.

  • Exceptional judgment and ability to handle rapid-response scenarios calmly under pressure.

  • Significant experience and media relationships in health, higher education and federal or state policy-related sectors.

  • Superb writing and editing skills, strong project management skills.

  • Excellent people management skills, ensuring staff are meeting goals and objectives in a sustainable way and growing professionally.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of people and manage people’s work without supervising them directly.

  • Exceptional project management skills and the ability to navigate a project with multiple moving pieces and players.

  • Talent in influencing others toward outcomes through sophisticated relationship management.

  • Commitment and track record of advancing racial equity in both operations and communications.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
